You remember that childhood rhyme, don’t you?
Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.
How innocent we were to believe it. Or did we? Maybe it was the desire to have words not affect us in negative ways, that lead to the rhyme being popular. But as most children and adults know, words DO hurt us. They have the power to break a persons spirit and build someone up.
I don’t know about you, but it seems like everyone nowadays, has a voice and uses it in more wide reaching ways. Texting, Facebook, Twitter, Blogging, Vlogging…and on the list goes. But in all those voices and sounds coming in, we’ve lost the ability to be silent, to listen, to not be distracted. I know I have. I have found myself longing for silence. No pings and alerts from my phone. No sounds from the multiply screens in the house. Nothing. It is beginning to seem as an assault on my senses for sounds to be coming at me in various ways and forms.
Now, please…don’t get me wrong. I listen to music, watch movies, play videos on you tube. But less and less do I desire the back ground noise.
What words do you allow into your home? Into your life? What words and sounds do you entertain in your heart? One day, I want it said of me, that I was a kind mother and wife, listened with her whole being, and gave wise advice.
