My Grandma and QE2

Both joined the military to help support their countries during WWII

Both had/have a taste for photography

Both loved/love the outdoors

Both had wherewithall too take care of their families.

I’m honored to call one Grandma and I’m ‘sad’ to say I’m slightly…moderately…marginally….sorta kinda….obsessed with the other and her family.

Cleaning, because I was completely, and utterly WIGGED out!

My house is small, and has very little storage and nothing outside for outside things. So that means…we have things that float around the house with no permanent home.  It adds to the clutter and messy look.

Which drives. Me. Nutts.

So, today…after reading a few blogs on organizing and de-cluttering, I was inspired to clean! To toss. To minimize! So here’s today’s tally from the cleaning results:

4 large bags of trash

No picture of this, I tossed them as we filled them!

2 bags to go to Goodwill

Main closet has room for guests coats, shoes and purses

No picture of this either!

Hall closet is now organized and child friendly (medications on upper shelves)

Bathroom organized

Kitchen organized (90%, still have 10% left)

I was thinking that I’m pretty darn smart, to use this tension rod to hold our paper towels, but I’m sure somewhere in the blogosphere, someone has thought of it!

I also need to get some fabric and make a curtain for the bookcase-turned-pantry.

After all of that work, we rested. And then I felt inspired to make something in my newly organized kitchen!

And a close up one, to make you drool!

I have NO idea what to call these…it’s Pillsbury Crescent rolls, with Andie’s Mints in the middle, rolled in cinnamon sugar and baked. It’s good stuff!!!!

So, that was our day! It’s good to purge, clean and put things in their place.

What do you need to do in your house? How do you get inventive with ways to clean, organize and such??

In His Hands,

Simple Traditions

During this time of year, we all give more thought to the traditions that are passed down to the next generations. My family is no different. Some of ours are simple and slightly odd (maybe) but they are fun:

Helping Grandma decorate her tree and making candy or cookies

Go look at Christmas lights

Buy an ornament for the youngest

Make a fun egg omelet for Christmas morning, and whomever gets the walnut is the first to open gifts

And some new ones:

Gingerbread houses

Town Square lighting

Christmas at The Heights (our church has an amazingly fun and great celebration!)

Cookie Exchange

But in all of that, the most important thing is this…

Quality time with those we love.

No matter what the traditions are, or where they take us, we spend time with family and loved ones. To me, that is the whole point of this season. The hospitality, the generosity, the warm and fuzzy feelings we all get. The memories are what I remember from growing up, not the gifts.

What are your family traditions? Have you started any new ones after getting married, and having children? Please share them, I might just incorporate them next year!

In His Hands,

Holiday season is approaching

Although I’m sure you knew that, especially if you have children off to school! New school year rings in the hectic fun 1st semester.

For a few years now, I’ve been thinking and praying about my holidays. How I’ll celebrate them, what traditions I’ll pass down to my children. When I think back to my favorite times during the holidays, it’s not the gifts I received or gave that I remember. It’s the sounds, smells and family I was with that warms my heart. The traditions we shared, and the simple things that had meaning to our family. This is what I want to pass down. Not the consumerism, the hustle and drive to get THE toy of the season. That all passes away from our memories anyways, so why indulge it to begin with?

Then, when Michael passed, things changed. I gave more thought about how to spend his birthday. How to celebrate his short life. So many people don’t have as we have, in that I mean we’re blessed with family and friends who give of their hearts and abilities. I want to share that gift with someone, a child. I’m still praying about how it’ll come about. I’m sure it’ll take a few years to get it down, but I am happy to know that every year on Mickey’s birthday, someone will be blessed because of him.

My plan for this holiday season is simple.

To give more than I receive. To give more joy, more smiles, more love and understanding. To spend more time with those who are important in my life. To share the joy of the season, even in the midst of pain, as it’s the first without my Dad.

What are your plans for this season? What makes it special to you and your children?

Chocolate Chip Sour Cream Coffee Cake

Just the name made me salivate. Thus, the hurried text to my husband to pick the two ingredients we didn’t have.

I got the recipe from a fellow blogger-Mom-fellow pregnant one, over at The Real Life of a Redhead, who then lead me to the blog of this woman, and her yummy, sugar coma inducing confection of sweetness that I made last night!

I’ll let the pictures do the talking here and then I’ll sum up my cooking abilities.

The ingredients! I forgot to put the flour in the picture tho!

Before baking goodness…

So…theres a little problem, don’t you think?! Wrong sized pan = Mt. Vesuvius.

In my oven. That I’d just cleaned.  I’m still a little traumatized.

Look at the yummy burnt-ness? Doesn’t it make you wanna run out and eat it?! 🙂

I went into a sugar coma after eating just a small piece.

I actually couldn’t FINISH what I’d served myself, it was so sweet!

But, it was still yummy! Even if it’s still all over the bottom of my oven…hardened due to longer cooking time…burnt on. *sigh* I guess I should go clean the oven now. And when I’m done, I’m not using it ever again! Okay so that’s a broad statement. I’ll put tin foil down, as a few people mentioned to me.

Hope your cooking adventures are much smoothing sailing than mine! It’s not always a dull moment in my kitchen 🙂

PS, Husbands verdict, It’s GOOD. 🙂

Super Fast Pasta Bake – No kidding it IS fast!

So a friend, and fellow blogger, posted on Facebook a link for a food blog. I can be lost on those blogs for hours, more so now that I’m pregnant! I was kinda looking to see if I could make anything from it, not really thinking I could. We’re kinda bare around here! But, as luck would have it, I DID find a yummy looking recipe that I could slightly adjust for us! 🙂  (Make sure you check out Real Mom Kitchen for her awesome looking recipes! I can’t wait to try more.)

Here are a few pictures from the Super Fast Pasta Bake:

Just getting ready to pull it from the oven, doesn’t it look yummy?!

I really couldn’t wait to dig into it!!!

Look at that! My mouth is still watering 😉

Gotta have the up close and personal type picture. Too bad they haven’t invented scratch n sniff!

This is a must make! Enjoy, my friends.

Linky Wednesday!

The Real Life Of A Red Head: Home-made laundry soap – This is so simple! I imagine you could add essential oils to it, or crushed lavender, etc for a slight smell. I can’t wait to make this up for myself!

I’m trying to stay away from processed foods, and wouldn’t you know it? Most of the coupons out there are for processed foods! So happy to have found this site!
